If on a winter's night the Alpe di Siusi

Sledging in the moonlight with friends, the cross country marathon at full moon, the concerts of Swing on Snow. The holiday area Alpe di Siusi offers winter nights with a varied and rich program.

At daytime guests and residents as well enjoy winter on the ski slopes, on the cross-country tracks at the foot of the Dolomites, or feel the thrill of King Laurin SnowparkWinter walkers leave their tracks in the snow, and those who enjoy ski touring reach the highest peaks, such as the Sasso Piatto. And then they all come together in huts along the trails and paths. And when night falls, and the lifts close and the aerial cable car undertakes its last way back, direction valley station, then the more "nocturnal" transform the area into a magical paradise.

The winter nights at Alpe di Siusi and in the villages surrounding it, are illuminated  by the light of torches and the moon. And the first event is the descent with torches of the Ski School Sciliar 3000 along the track of the Bullaccia slope on December 30, 2011. On New Year's Eve the village of Siusi invites children and adults at the party in the ice rink in the center of Siusi and Castelrotto welcomes the New Year with fireworks. The "Magic Impressions" are organized by the Alpe di Siusi Ski School on January 5, 2012 during a show on skis along the Bullaccia slope.

In January 2012, the evenings of Swing on Snow will serve as the ideal soundtrack, at the foot of the Sciliar mountain: Diandl Opas, Spafudla, Doppelbock, and some other bands are celebrating until late at night.

One of the most outstanding sport events is the cross country marathon at moonlight Moonlight Classic on February 7, 2012. Those who want to experience the thrill of a run after dark can choose a section along 36 or 20 km. And they will be greeted by the fire artist Saraph.

There will be some sport event also in Fié: the Lake Laghetto di Fiè is loved in winter by those who practice ice curling. The only quality required is strength. Experiencing nature: this is the leitmotif of walking around with torches in Castelrotto and Siusi. The torch-light shows the way to hikers: at Carnival on February 21, 2012 carnival masks accompany the procession of torches.

Romantic and comfortable hours are guaranteed during a sleigh ride at moonlight. Those who love the speed will meet up with friends for a night-time tobogganing with sledges.

It's Christmas Time in the Dolomites

The aroma of mulled wine, lebkuchen and cinnamon lies in the air: it's Christmas time at the foot of the Sciliar mountain. Off the beaten track, the villages Castelrotto and Siusi allo Sciliar get into the Christmas spirit. The Christmas market of Castelrotto is bound to the tradition: Sarentino cardigans, socks and jackets from the knitting Paul line up next to wood and crib figures, candles, crochet and felted works. For those snacky moments farmers from Castelrotto serve traditional specialities of the South Tyrolean cuisine. With its little stands the Christmas market is the place for a cosy get together with mulled wine, punch or hot apple juice.

For the first time, a Krampus procession will take place in Castelrotto this year: approx. 500 Krampuses from the entire Alpine region fill the streets around Castelrotto. Instead of Christmas tones loud cowbells ring in the streets, for the Krampus, the uncanny companion of Nicholas, announces his coming from far away with his cowbell.

It get's more contemplative on December 16 and 17 when the well-known folk group, the Kastelruther Spatzen, gets us in the mood for the feast of love. The folk group will sing Christmas carols such as "Stille Nacht" ("Silent Night"), but also some of their own songs about life and love.

Also Siusi allo Sciliar offers something special for the Christmas time. December 9 and 10 are all about "Siusi on Ice": a cosy get-together will take place at the ice rink in the village centre. Traditionally, mulled wine and punch are served, while the young and the young at heart glide across the ice.

Dolomites: All eyes on winter

On December 3, 2011 the Alpe di Siusi kicks off the winter season 2011/2012. Up to April 15, 2012 the Alpe di Siusi winter is all about skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing.

First snow and Christmas atmosphere set the tone in December: the Christmas market in Castelrotto offers traditional handcraft and Christmas baking. Get together in the historic centre and enjoy mulled vine and Christmas sounds! For the first time Castelrotto is the setting for a Krampus procession: about 500 Krampuses from all over the Alps will meet on December 10 in the picturesque village at the foot of the Sciliar Mountain and paint the town red.
For fans of high speed, there is the Highspeed Race on December 11, 2011: four-man teams with at least one woman will compete against each other – and against challenger and former Italian ski racer Kristian Ghedina.

In January the Alpe di Siusi holiday region is the right place to be for music lovers, bon vivants and actives. At the traditional "Hoazetkuchl" culinary festival, restaurants in Castelrotto dish up goulash soup, rye bread and other wedding food typical in the ancient times. On January 22, 2012 you can try the game of golf on snow. The musical highlight is the Alpe di Siusi WinterMusicFestival Swing on Snow: from January 22 to 29 alpine sounds emerge on the slopes and in the huts of the Alpe di Siusi and in the villages at the foot of the Sciliar Mountain.

Sports, sports, sports is the message in February and March: whether cross-country race by night, Red Bull Jib Ski Kings or alpine combination of the Blue Ribbon Race, the winter events offer competition combined with lots of fun.

In April the slopes on the Alpe di Siusi are kissed by the sun. Sun skiers head down the slopes and enjoy the magic in a mountain hut.

Hiking in the Dolomites along ancient tracks

Where coral reefs and ancient legends meet, there lies the wonderful world of the Dolomites.
Since June 2009, the so-called Pale Mountains are part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. Those who will trace ancient times will discover a world that is unique, ancient and legendary at the same time. Middle Ages, legends and the lives of two mountain pioneers, all this and far more can be experienced on the hiking trails on the Alpe di Siusi.

In the Footsteps of ...

... knight and bard Oswald von Wolkenstein, who lived in the Dolomites in Castelvecchio. He loved to travel and he visited Europe, Africa and Asia. The lifestyle of Oswald and his contemporaries of the 15th century can be partly revived by taking the Oswald von Wolkenstein path. The trail passes near the ruins of Castelvecchio and Salego and tells anecdotes about the etiquette of the time, that is at the times of knights and damsels.

... the Sciliar Witches, witches and wizards, mysterious figures and wild people who used to live in the Dolomites and intimidated the local population. Even today, the Chairs of the Witches in Castelrotto and Witches' Benches on the Alpe di Siusi recall the presence of the witches on the high alpine pasture. And the Sciliar, the symbol - mountain of South Tyrol, was the  favourite spot of the Sciliar Witches.

... the mountain pioneers Hans and Paula Steger. The couple, who loved climbing and skiing, experienced most of the peaks that surround the Sciliar and even the north side of the Catinaccio and the west slope of the first peak of the Sella. The Footpath of Hans and Paula Steger is dedicated not only to this famous couple of climbers, but also to the magnificent natural and cultural scenery of the Alpe di Siusi, to the coral and jellyfish fossils, hunters and Gods, the Alps and flowers.

... the Dolomites. A time journey in history, going back 270 million years, that is the birth date of the Dolomites when the creation of islands, volcanism and erosion was going on.  The geologist's path near Siusi ranks among the most interesting excursions from a geological point of view of the Dolomites from their origin up to now.

Hiking in the Dolomites along ancient tracks, traces of an ancient heritage and its inhabitants - the legendary and the real ones.

Alpe di Siusi tour. Let's go for a ride

South Tyrol is known as a real paradise for hikers but now mountain bikers discover the South Tyrolean Dolomites, too.

Mountain cabin Alpe di Tires, Alpe di Siusi, Marinzen Hut at Castelrotto, Malga Tuff Alm and Malga Hofer Alm in Fiè or the Ruins of Castelvecchio Castle in Siusi, there is a whole world to explore by mountain bike. Together with Val Gardena, Alpe di Siusi, has realized the bike paradise Val Gardena - Alpe di Siusi. That is a total of 33 tours, 1000 km of tracks and the 35,000 metres of height difference to be challenged on the slopes of Sasso Lungo and Sasso Piatto. Their peculiarity lies in their variety. The degree of difficulty varies from tour to tour, from easy to difficult, depending on individual abilities. The tours range from half-day tours, day tours and tours of several days.  Whatever tour you choose, and all tracks offer breathtaking views of the Dolomites.

Many aerial lifts offer a handy and convenient transport of mountain bikes. As for the aerial cableway Alpe di Siusi, the chairlifts Panorama Bullaccia, Marinzen and Sole the transport of bicycles is for free. In the realm of the Sciliar Witches

Witches' Benches, Chairs of the witches, Sciliar; Tschonstoan and Witches' Woods: hiking in the Alpe di Siusi in the Dolomites you will step in the footsteps of the legendary witches and other mythical figures of the Dolomites.

The Sciliar Witches, as still told today, met every Thursday on the Sciliar, the symbol mountain of South Tyrol. They came from everywhere, riding their brooms and forks to participate in their rituals and dances. And to prepare for terrible storms. The Tourist Path leads from Compaccio to the Sciliar Rock where the Sciliar Witches' used to prepare their terrible rites and scare the poor farmers up in the mountains and down in the valley. The north side of the Sciliar rock dwells on various curves. Those who spend the summer on the Alpe di Siusi meet Gentians, Edelweiss and other flowers including the "Sciliar witches" as the Aquilegia einseleana is affectionately called.

Even at the Bullaccia the Sciliar witches have left their traces. At the top of the valley rise the Witches’ Benches. Here the witches used to relax before going up the Sciliar rock. Even among the hikers the Witches' Benches are very popular. The benches made of porphyry hatch beautiful views of the Gardena Valley and of Castelrotto. A simple path suitable for all families, on the southern side of the Bullaccia takes you to the Witches' Benches.

A few minutes walk from the mountain station of the Alpe di Siusi aerial cableway in direction Saltria, one encounters the great rock 'Tschonstoan" (Tschonstein): the legendary wizard Kachler Hans, one day in a rage, threw a heavy stone from the Sciliar in the direction of the Alpe di Siusi, on the very same place where you can admire it even today. Those who walk towards Saltria can admire the Tschonstoan, a relic of 15,000 years ago, on their left.

Adventures all around - this is what the tour "The Witches' Sources" approx. 2 km long promises. The adventure and barefoot trail takes children as well as adults through the "Bosch Curasoa", therapeutic wood – which got this name due to the healing properties of its sources of sulphur. Good witches used to live there and used their magical powers to help both men and animals. The witches left the wood a long time ago, and there remains only the witch Curadina, that guides visitors through it.

Even hiking trails on the slopes of the Sciliar rock that is in Castelrotto show the history of its most famous and most feared inhabitants: In the woods just above Castelrotto you come across the Witches' Chairs, that is boulders that have the shape of a chair. It could have been a prehistoric site, or a court. As legend recalls, also this place is famous for being a meeting point of the Sciliar Witches.
